On May 13, U.S. Department of Labor Assistant Secretary (A/S) for Policy Rajesh Nayak participated in the #APEC Public-Private Dialogue on Best Practices for the Transition of Economic Actors from Informal to Formal Economy. During the session on policy challenges and best practices, A/S Nayak shared case studies on regulatory and voluntary intervention strategies APEC economies could incorporate in facilitating this transition.      On the regulatory front, A/S Nayak discussed the importance of the independent contractor rulemaking finalized in early 2024 under the United States Fair Labor Standards Act to help level the playing field for employers and protect workers’ rights to minimum wage and overtime pay. On the voluntary side, A/S Nayak introduced the work of The Workers Lab in allowing workers to seek short-term, flexible, formal employment opportunities, showcasing their skills acquired from past experiences using a unique "badge" system that also facilitates improved matchmaking between workers and employers. #APECPeru2024
